Enrolling Children in a Polish School — 2024 Guide for Foreigners

How to enrol your child in a Polish school in 2024. Documents, language classes, free education, podstawówka, liceum, technikum. Special arrangements for Ukrainian and Belarusian children, additional Polish-language hours.

Children of foreigners in Poland are entitled to free education in the public system on the same terms as Polish children — enshrined in the Polish Constitution (art. 70) and the Ustawa o systemie oświaty. The enrolment procedure differs from the one for Polish citizens: translations of documents are required, sometimes apostilles, and an understanding of the system of szkoły podstawowe, liceá, technika, and szkoły branżowe. Below — what to do in Warsaw in 2024 to secure your child a school place.

Ages and Types of Schools

The Polish education system:

AgeSchool typeGrade
3–6 yearsprzedszkole (kindergarten)
6–7 yearszerówka (preparatory)0
7–15 yearsszkoła podstawowa (primary + lower secondary)1–8
15–19 yearsliceum ogólnokształcące (general high school)1–4
15–19/20 yearstechnikum (technical + general)1–5
15–18 yearsszkoła branżowa (vocational)1–3

Children aged 7–15 have a school obligation (obowiązek szkolny). After podstawówka — minimum 3 years of any secondary school is mandatory (obowiązek nauki to age 18).

Enrolling in Szkoła Podstawowa — Step by Step

Step 1. Determine the rejon of your residence. In Warsaw every school has a "mandatory rejon" — streets whose meldunek-registered children have a guaranteed place. Check at warszawa19115.pl or edukacja.warszawa.pl.

Step 2. Gather documents:

  • Birth certificate of the child with apostille + sworn translation
  • Child's passport (or parent's passport if child is registered there)
  • Vaccination certificate (health record) with translation
  • School transcript — academic "świadectwo" with grades for the past 2–3 years + translation
  • Karta pobytu or karta CUKR of the child (for UA — PESEL UKR is sufficient)
  • Meldunek at residence address (or proof of residence via lease)

Step 3. Submit the wniosek to the chosen school. In Warsaw enrolment is via rekrutacja-warszawa.pl (main periods: March–April). For mid-year enrolment (arrived during the year) — directly to the principal.

Step 4. The school accepts or directs to a neighbouring school with capacity. Polish law requires the Warsaw authorities to provide a place for every child with legalny pobyt.

Language Classes — Critical Element

Foreign children receive additional Polish lessons — up to 6 hours per week, free of charge, for up to 24 months of study. These are supplementary classes typically scheduled alongside regular lessons.

To obtain these hours, parents file a "wniosek o organizację dodatkowych zajęć języka polskiego" in the first weeks after enrolment. Most schools have status teachers — "asystent kulturowy" (cultural assistants) — for classes with many foreign students (often Ukrainians).

Free School Meals

In Poland school lunches (obiad) are paid — usually 8–15 PLN per meal. However, for low-income families (below 1,052 PLN per family member in 2024) — free meals via MOPS (Miejski Ośrodek Pomocy Społecznej). Application via warszawa19115.pl, "Pomoc społeczna" section.

Liceum, Technikum, Szkoła Branżowa

After grade 8 of szkoła podstawowa, the child chooses a secondary school. Enrolment based on results of the egzamin ósmoklasisty (mandatory for all in Poland) and grade-8 marks.

For foreign children arriving in Poland during higher grades:

  • If there is an analogous programme in the country of origin (secondary school certificate or equivalent), uznanie świadectwa zagranicznego is processed via the kuratorium oświaty (1–3 months)
  • If the child has not yet completed secondary education in the country of origin, they are placed in the corresponding grade with additional Polish hours

Enrolment via rekrutacja-warszawa.pl from May to July for the following academic year.

Special Cases

Ukrainian children with PESEL UKR. Special integration programme: guaranteed place + additional Polish hours + free meals (if the family receives UKR-related benefits). Enrolment via a dedicated form on warszawa19115.pl.

Children without Polish. "Oddziały przygotowawcze" — preparatory classes for foreign children with intensive Polish (up to 12 hours/week) for 1–2 years. After them — transfer to a regular class.

Weekend / online schools. For children whose parents plan to return to the country of origin in 1–2 years, there are weekend-school options (e.g., the Ukrainian embassy in Warsaw organises Saturday Ukrainian-curriculum classes) or remote learning via Ukrainian/Belarusian online schools. This does not replace obowiązek szkolny but can serve as a supplement.

Costs — Itemised

ItemAmount
Public podstawówka, liceum, technikumfree
Textbooksfree via subsidies
Document sworn translations200–500 PLN one-off
Apostille on birth certificates50–100 PLN one-off
School lunches160–300 PLN/month (or free via MOPS)
School supplies100–200 PLN at start of year
School activities (trips, theatre)30–100 PLN/year

Private international schools in Warsaw (American School, British School, French School, Lycée Français Varsovie) — 30,000–80,000 PLN/year, instruction in English/French.

Most Common Mistakes

  1. Late sworn translations. The birth certificate must be translated before enrolment, not after. Miss this — the place is lost.
  2. Applying to only one school. In rekrutacja-warszawa.pl you can apply to 5–7 schools by priority. Always apply to several.
  3. Skipping additional Polish lessons. Many parents forget to submit the wniosek in the first 2 weeks — getting hours later is harder.
  4. No meldunek. Schools may decline if the child has no meldunek, citing lack of guaranteed place in the rejon.
  5. Missing transcript from previous school. Without academic history, a school may place the child a grade below their level.

When You Need a Lawyer or Education Consultant

70% of parents handle this independently. A lawyer makes sense if:

  • Child has special educational needs (orzeczenie o potrzebie kształcenia specjalnego)
  • Conflict with the school over admission / refusal
  • Recognition of foreign secondary certificate for liceum/technikum
  • Parallel changes to your karta pobytu or family status

At LegalWin our school enrolment service includes help with translations, apostilles, wniosek filing, and accompaniment at the school. From 600 PLN.
